Posted on June 26th, 2013 David Brooks No comments

Sony just dropped a real bomb on the phablet market by officially introducing one of the largest smartphones of all time on Tuesday: the Xperia Z Ultra, with a 6.4-inch screen. It is the latest addition to its Xperia Z series and a new smartphone that blurs the line between smartphone and tablet. This can be the most exciting revolution in large-screen smartphone entertainment devices with the largest Full HD smartphone display, top-of-the-line processor and many other blazing features.

    Design:
The Xperia Z Ultra features the same acclaimed OmniBalance design as Xperia Z and Tablet Z. And the craftsmanship in design comes to the fore with clean lines and premium materials – the front and back are made of tempered glass, creating a seamless surface with the OptiContras panel housed in an innovative solid metal frame which looks stunning from any angle. The Xperia Z Ultra is available in a choice of black, white or purple color finishes.

World’s Largest Full HD Smartphone Display:
The biggest feature of the Ultra must be the large 6.44-inch touchscreen display rated at 1920 x 1080 pixels and 16.7 million colors. Sony used its Bravia TV experience to enhance colors in what it calls a Triluminos display. The technology analyzes an image and reproduces pixels that are missing to optimize video quality.

    Video Playback
It is known that video playback function of its previous sibling Xperia Z is just fantastic thanks to its full HD display with 1920-by-1080p resolution, as people can easily download YouTube video to Xperia Z and convert videos to Xperia Z for just oh-so-amazing enjoyment. With the same high 1920 x 1080 pixels and even large display, movie playback on Xperia Z Ultra would be more amazing.

    Waterproof:
Like the Xperia Z, the Z Ultra is certified with an IP58 durability rating which means it is both water and dust proof. You can even film in Full HD underwater, taking your large-screen smartphone experience to a new level.

    Built for Business
The Xperia Z Ultra is the ideal business partner thanks to the super responsive screen with handwriting recognition which is compatible with any pencil and selected stylus or pen (capacitive stylus or metal pen with tip diameter over 1mm). You can even write notes or sketches during calls so you’ll always be ready capture your ideas as they happen. The easy-toggle keyboard makes it ideal for one-handed input and multi-tasking, with small apps to help you improve productivity so you don’t lose time browsing between windows.

    Ultra Connectivity
With one-touch functions you can instantly and easily share music, photos and videos from your smartphone to a wide range of NFC-enabled Sony devices, including speakers, SmartWatch, wireless headsets and TVs. There are several new and innovative accessories joining the range of popular connected devices.

    OS
Powered by Android 4.2, it’s the first handset from Sony Mobile to launch with the latest version of Jelly Bean. Sony’s custom UI keeps most of the default stock Android features, while adding little tweaks such as a one-handed keyboard and Sony’s own small apps.

    Processor:
It features a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor rated at 2.2GHz, the top-of-the-line hardware it packed makes it the world’s fastest smartphone.

    Camera:
The “phone” includes an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with Sony’s Exmor RS sensor, which can take both HDR photos and film – not unlike the standard Xperia Z. The camera features Exmor RS for mobile, HDR for both photos and film, and Superior Auto mode automatically activates HDR and noise reduction when needed, so you will get stunning imagery even in challenging light conditions.

Ultra has 16GB of internal storage, expandable with up to a 64GB microSD card and supports Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC and LTE. A large 3000 mAh hour battery is rated for up to 11 hours of talk time.

The Xperia Z Ultra is earning largely positive early reviews for its minimalistic, stylish appeal and impressive guts under the hood. And it is making a splash in the smartphone market. However, Sony did not specify when the Xperia Z Ultra will come out in the U.S. It is scheduled to make its global launch some time in the next few months.

  • 5 Best Android Smartphones to Get for 2013 Spring

Posted on May 3rd, 2013 David Brooks No comments

With the approaching of hot summer season, we have to say goodbye to spring. You may want to get a new smartphone to replace your old fashioned smartphone to welcome the new season. If so, this is the right place you should go. Some of the biggest phone manufacturers have just released their brand new 2013 flagship devices, just like Sony and Samsung, who recently released their widely welcomed smartphones, and it just so happens that all of them run on Android. As a tradition, Apple’s iPhone gets a refresh much later in the year, not in spring, and the same goes for Windows Phone. So, the only choice seems to be Android smartphones.

Now, the question goes to what kind of Android smartphones you should choose. Without comparison, it is really hard to pick out the answer, as so many Android smartphones are on the market for your option. To make it easy for you to pick up your device, we have listed our top five picks for new Android devices that are already available or coming in just a couple of days. Take a look at them below to decide which one you need.

    Your No. 1 choice – Samsung Galaxy S 4

    Samsung Galaxy S 4

Samsung didn’t exactly catch us by surprise with the Galaxy S4. However, it’s the flawless implementation of all the features that makes the Galaxy S4 the superb smartphone that it is. Design-wise, the latest Samsung flagship is nothing special. It looks OK and is comfortable to hold. We’re more than happy to see that Samsung has managed to make the smartphone even smaller than the GS III, which is a remarkable achievement, considering the bigger screen.

    No. 2 – HTC One

    HTC One

HTC wanted a comeback and it brought its best with the HTC One. It is a brilliant device in virtually every aspect. Coming with a beautiful aluminum body that fits almost organically in the hand, it has a great and vivid, extremely sharp 4.7-inch screen. The stereo front speaker bring a small revolution in smartphone sound that you’ll appreciate instantly when you hear it. Performance is flawless on the new Snapdragon 600 quad-core chip.

    No. 3 – Sony Xperia Z

    Sony Xperia Z

The Sony Xperia Z was the first 2013 flagship. It was the first of many more with a 5-inch 1080p display, but while we were disappointed with the quality of that screen, the device had one more ace up its sleeve – it was water and dust resistant. With the thought of summer, beaches and swimming, and the possibility to take the Xperia Z with you wherever you go (you can also shoot videos and images underwater), we are very tempted to get it. The handset also has a decent 13-megapixel Exmor RS camera that performs well in low light.

    No. 4 – Nexus 4

    Nexus 4

The Nexus 4 might have launched a few months ago but it only recently started shipping in volume on the Google Play store. Most importantly, though, it has remained extremely competitive in price. It’s a compact and practical decision. It has a 4.7-inch 720p screen and realistically looking it is almost impossible to justify a 1080p display on a phone, so that’s definitely not a flaw. What’s more the Nexus 4 is the first to get the latest Android updates, and the most affordable of all devices in this list.

    No. 5 – LG Optimus G Pro

    LG Optimus G Pro

The LG Optimus G Pro is a brilliantly timed device. Coming nearly half a year after the Note II, it manages to take advantage and stuff in an extremely crisp 1080p 5.5-inch screen that is very vivid and impressive. The G Pro is not for everyone, but for those who enjoy the big screens it would offer a flawless performance and a great camera. Phablet lovers, this should be your choice this spring.
