  • How do Chinese Smartphone Brands like Huawei Survive in the European Market

    Posted on March 9th, 2017 Henry | 13,269 comments

    In Europe, a lot of people must’ve heard about Chinese smartphone brands like Huawei or Lenovo. More and more Chinese smartphone manufacturers are participating in some global electronic shows. For instance, in the Mobile World Congress that just past a few weeks ago, more than half of the smartphones announced are made in China or came from China.

    style=”display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px”
    data-ad-client=”ca-pub-8496100294517982″
    data-ad-slot=”2200753907″>

    As a matter of fact, China has been one of the most crucial smartphone markets for a lot of manufacturers, whether they’re Chinese companies or not.

    style=”display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px”
    data-ad-client=”ca-pub-8877674303109942″
    data-ad-slot=”4123226464″>

    And with the rapid development and spread of smartphones in China in the past few years, the demands are bound to decrease when the market comes to a saturated state. When facing pressures from both overseas and local smartphone manufacturers in the Chinese market, seeking development overseas seems inevitable for Chinese manufacturers. To many of those companies, oversea markets have never been so important before. If the company don’t want to subject to the limited increase of market sharing in China, overseas markets would be a good choice for development.

    According to the published data from a Chinese market research company, the growth rate of the Chinese smartphone market would drop from last year’s 20% to 5% this year.

    Marching into the European market is actually way more complicated than it looks. Some manufacturers used to grab attention from the public through launch events and sales promotions and they might not be working out well this year.

    Huawei is one of the few Chinese smartphone manufacturers that entered the European market in an early time. The company’s been applying a dual-brand strategy which turned out to be a success. According to a spokesmen of Honor, during the Black Friday period, the online sales number is inspiring, 35,000 units of Honor 8 sold out within 3 days which tops other smartphone brands selling phones online in West Europe.

    Huawei had set the goal of reaching 5% market share in Europe when it first enter the market and the goal was accomplished two years ago. Since then, the company set the goal to be around 10-12% and achieved it within 2 years.

    Huawei’s oversea sales have grown faster than in the domestic market. Especially in Europe, Huawei has taken more than 20% of the market share in certain countries. And in the overall west European market, it’s about 11%. And in the high-end smartphone market where Huawei has to compete with traditional brands like Samsung and Apple, it still takes up 14.3%.

    The dual-brand strategy plays a key role in Huawei’s success in West Europe. The sales number of Honor brand had registered at a year-on-year growth of 8.6% in 2016. The Honor brand is continuously breaking records in online sales which makes other manufacturers start to pay more attention to this field.

    “We didn’t have much staff in our team like other companies does, but when it comes to holiday promotion, we’d start preparing for it a few month in advance which helped us build up a solid foundation for our success later.” said the spokesman of Huawei Honor.

    The company also cut down products for under €80 and focused on high-end units which later helped them successfully get rid of the tag of “budget phone”.

    In actuality, in the European market, subsidies from carriers has a great impact on the sales of smartphones and dealing with carriers and subsidies plays a critical role in sales.

    Breakthrough in e-commerce helps Huawei go further in the European market to some extent but it’s never an easy task for Huawei. People in Europe tend to be more rational when making a choice in buying smartphones. A smartphone with a high price-to-performance ratio is not as appealing in China as in Europe, so the company needed a new strategy for the market. Huawei started off by interacting with customers through social media like Facebook and Twitter.

    Huawei believes that the combination of premium products and electronic commence can help the company break the barriers and move forward in a faster pace. The key to success always lies in the quality of the product and an applicable business model.

    Samsung has announced that it is going to reveil its next flagship smartphone Samsung Galaxy S8 on the coming March 29, 2017. It is expected that Galaxy S8 will make its debut at MWC 2017, but the South Korea giant decided to delay the debut because of the disastrous Galaxy Note 7.

    Rumor has it that the Galaxy S8 will be a 5.8-inch handset. It is highly possible that a 6.2-inch S8 Plus will be launched together with Galaxy S8.

  • LG G6 Won’t Be Featuring Snapdragon 835 Because of Samsung

    Posted on February 4th, 2017 Henry | 204 comments

    LG’s upcoming flagship G6 won’t be featuring Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 835 chipset due to the fact that Samsung bought out all the chips that there won’t be any left for the other companies, according to a recent report.

    Ben Sin, a consumer tech writer for Forbes, recently criticized HTC for featuring Snapdragon 821 instead of the more powerful Snapdragon 835 in the year of 2017. But after digging deeper into that, he realized there’s a good reason for that.

    style=”display:inline-block;width:728px;height:90px”
    data-ad-client=”ca-pub-8877674303109942″
    data-ad-slot=”4123226464″>

    “I’ve spoken to some industry insiders in Asia today and I must apologize to HTC, because it would appear that the 835 is out of their reach until after April, so they couldn’t have used the 835 without drastically delaying the phone,” Sin writes.

    “In fact, that’s the case with almost all phones, including LG’s flagship. Yup, I have confirmed with an industry insider that the LG G6 will run on Snapdragon 821 instead of the 835 that everyone’s expecting.”

    The reason why the G6 will be missing out on the Snapdragon 835 is that Samsung has first dibs on it because it’s basically the biggest customer for Qualcomm and the order from the Korean Company is so big that there won’t be enough for other vendors.

    Big companies like LG, Sony and HTC won’t be able to have access to the Snapdragon 835 until after the official debut of the Galaxy S8 in the coming months.

    This won’t be much of an issue for LG’s fans actually as LG’s done things like this before. The LG chose the Snapdragon 808 instead of the 810, but that’s mainly because of the concern of overheating rather than stock out.

    From the latest leak we can see that the G6 would be featuring a USB-C port, headphone jack, a dual-camera arrangement and a rear-facing fingerprint sensor. And noticeably the device’s 5.7-inch display features virtually no bezel. All in all, the G6 is still a flagship worth expecting.

  • SamSung Blames Bad Battery Design And Rushed Release for Galaxy Note 7′s Catching Fire

    Posted on January 23rd, 2017 Yuson Zou | 414 comments

    Samsung says bad battery design and a rush to release an updated version of the Galaxy Note 7 caused some of the devices to overheat and explode.

    The company released a report Sunday night in which it said that two separate battery malfunctions caused some Note 7 phones to overheat and even catch fire.

    The first problem affected the first batch of Note 7 phones that launched last fall. In those phones, the battery was too large for its casing, causing some devices to overheat, according to Samsung’s report.

    galaxy-note7-discovery

    Recalling the initial batch of Note 7 phones, Samsung manufactured the phone with a battery from a different supplier. But Samsung was in a rush to get the new phones out, and the new battery produced by the supplier had a defect that also caused it to overheat, the report said.

    Samsung ended up recalling all Note 7 phones and canceling the product altogether.Samsung says it has developed a new eight-point battery check to make sure future devices don’t suffer the same fate as the Galaxy Note 7. The test includes an X-ray of the phone and extreme testing conditions that force the battery to work harder than normal.

    Now that Samsung knows what caused the problem with the Note 7, it has the unique challenge of proving that its devices can be trusted moving forward.

    The company says it now has the processes in place to make sure its phones don’t overheat and catch fire again, but after months of speculation the world will have to wait for Samsung’s next device to see whether the company can follow through. The company is expected to release its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S8, this spring.

  • Samsung Officially Rolled Out Android 7.0 for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge

    Posted on January 19th, 2017 Henry | 229 comments

    Samsung started soak testing Android 7.0 Nougat for Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge earlier this week. And now the official rollout has come to more users. And the company is also planning on rolling out Android 7.0 update to more devices within the first half of the year.

    There are a lot of changes on the UI front, noticeably the Quick Panel is much cleaner now and looks a bit like what we saw on the Note 7. “Tiles have been removed from the icons in the panel’s first depth,” Samsung noted. “Icons in the second depth are organized into groups of nine, making them easier to locate. There’s also a new pop-up app mode that allows up to five pop-ups at once, in addition to split screen mode that Samsunt smartphones have had for years.

    Samsung even gave the devices Performance Mode. “The newly added Performance Mode lets users optimize their smartphones to better meet their specific need by activating one of the four available modes,” Samsung said. “Optimized mode, for example, extends battery life and enhances speed, and is suitable for daily usage, while game mode provides users functions such as Game Launcher and Game Tools. Entertainment mode enhances sound and image quality and High Performance mode enables the highest quality display settings possible.”

    Users should be able to receive the update now, but if the Samsung device you have isn’t unlocked, the update has to go through carriers which may cause delay of the update. There would be more updates coming for devices including Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, Galaxy Note 5, Galaxy Tab A with S Pen, Galaxy Tab S2 (LTE unlock), Galaxy A3 and Galaxy A8.

  • Cortana Is On its Way to Android Lockscreen

    Posted on January 18th, 2017 Henry | 644 comments

    Cortana will soon be updated to be on the lockscreen on Android smartphones, according to MsPoweruser. Microsoft recently released a new update for Cortana for iOS and Android, which has a totally redisigned user interface.

    According to MsPoweruser, the new version of Cortana would provide users with the option to enable Cortana on the lockscreen inside of the setup menu. “After that, a simple Cortana logo will show up near the bottom of your lock screen and you can swipe the logo left or right to open up the Cortana panel,” the website explained.

    When you go to the splash screen, there would be information provided to you from Cortana, including things like the weather, upcoming appointments and other data that comes from the information you’ve provided in the Cortana Notebook on your phone or PC.

    Microsoft has been planning to bring Cortana everywhere and this is just a small part of the plan. What we are really expecting from Microsoft is what Cortana can do around the house because currently the similiar home assistants we can think of are Google Home and Amazon Echo. But it’s good to know that Microsoft has a good start bringing Cortana to more places.
