• 6 Highlights of Google I/O Conference 2013 Keynote Speech

Posted on May 16th, 2013 David Brooks No comments

The 3-hour-long Google I/O keynote came with abundant announcements. Out of our expectations, the most anticipated Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie will not be announced during Google I/O. and maybe Google thought they brought so many hardware devices in the last I/O conference, this Google I/O mostly focuses on software and service. There’s no Google Glass, Nexus Q, nor the rumored X Phone and new Nexus 7 tablet. The only device scheduled to appear in Google I/O is Google Galaxy S 4, the Google version of Samsung Galaxy S 4 with the native Android OS. Of course, every attendee would get a free Chrome Book Pixel as a gift, though still not a new thing.

But you needn’t get disappointed. In the three hours keynote, many Google staff explained dozens of new functions and services, which are creative and attractive, like the Google Search, Google Maps, etc. To sum up, there’re at least 6 highlights of Google I/O conference 2013.

    Google Play Games Services

    Google Play Games Service

Google, on the Google I/O conference, officially announced its brand-new gaming service, the Google Play Games Services, which has been reported before. This new gaming service is to compete with Apple’s GameCenter. Compared with GameCenter, the advantages of Google Play Games Services include its ability to save gaming progress online, sync between multiple devices including iOS and WEB, combine gaming chart to Google+, etc. New functions would be noticed via Google Play Services update.

    Google Play Music Services

Google Play Music ServiceGoogle also brings new Google Play Music Serivces, which charges for $9.99 per month as preorder price in USA. Preorder before June 30 would save $2 per month. This new service provides people with ability to create music radio, personal recommendation, customization, etc. It’s still not clear whether it supports to save to local disk.

    Education

Google built a Google Play app store exclusively for teachers. Students only need to get a Google account, then teachers could help them to select proper apps and push and install the apps on students’ tablets or PCs. Not only apps, but also books and videos could be done in such way. The Google Play educational version would start this fall, while receiving apps from developers from summer.

    Google+

    Google+

Whether you think that Google+ is a Facebook competitor or not, the 41 features introduced today will get your attention. The stream itself, which now has 190 million monthly active users, is now three-columned and has interactive animations all over the place. Google says that the stream was flat, so it needed a fresh take.

If you’re into taking photos, Google has finally integrated all of Nik’s professional photo suite goodies and will now auto-enhance your shots with something they call “Awesome.”

Not a photographer, but chat with your friends a lot? GTalk, Talk, Google Chat or whatever you’ve been referring to it is gone. Hangouts is in, and it’s an app for iOS, Android and the desktop. It has video and text chats, complete with emoji and presence. We’re just glad that they didn’t call it Babel, which was the real internal name for the project.

The takeaway here is that Google knows that you want to talk to your friends and family. It thinks that if it can integrate features to facilitate your communication from anywhere — at your desk or on your phone or tablet — they have you covered.

    Google Search

    Google Search

Search is getting smarter these days. Google knows that you go to its site whenever you can’t think of something, but it wants you to be able to ask it questions naturally. You can do that on Android and iOS with Google Now, but the company announced conversational search for the desktop today. Speaking of Google Now, you can get public transit information, as well as details on your favorite TV shows, books and video games.

Knowledge Graph, which fires in little snippets of information when you perform a search, added some new languages and statistics.

The takeaway here is that Google wants even more of your searches, but would rather you sit back and relax while performing them. There’s no need to think about how to get the best search result, simply ask a question.

    Google Maps

    Google Maps

Getting the gist yet? Google is refreshing all the things to make them easier to use, develop for and discuss with your Mom and Dad. Speaking of Mom and Dad, they probably use Google Maps to get just about everywhere.

Mobile Maps users will get a new experience come summertime, while the desktop experience got such a complete overhaul that they’ve only made it available in preview mode as to not give anyone a heart attack. Want to see it for yourself? Check out our hands-on look.

The takeaway here is that Google Maps has been a force for almost 10 years. It was time to make the product more user friendly, helping you discover new places and not just get from point A to point B.

  • 4 Devices People Anticipated to Appear on 2013 Google I/O Conference

Posted on May 7th, 2013 David Brooks No comments

During May 15th and 17th, the tech giant Google would hold its 2013 Google I/O Conference in Moscone Center of San Francisco. People worldwide have been longing for this big event for long, and are all eager to know what Google would bring out during this annual event. In the past few months, people have done a great many guess work on the upcoming event, but the rumors and reports online seem to change people’s mind day by day. Currently, we could get what Google would bring to us in the Google I/O conference, but we could show our own anticipations towards this annual event. The following 4 devices are collected online, which are expected to appear in the big approaching event.

    Motorola X Phone

    X Phone

The Motorola X Phone is without doubt what everyone wants to see at I/O, and though the belief is that the device will only hit shelves in July or August. Currently, the detailed information about this new smartphone is not much. It reportedly would come with a Snapdragon S4 Pro processor (some reported to be Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor), a 4.8-inch 1280×720 display, Android 4.2.2 (some rumored to be Key Lime Pie), 8 GB and 16 GB storage options  with no MicroSD expansion; 2 GB RAM and an 8MP camera.

    Next-gen Nexus 7

    Nexus 7.7

Android fans will know that having a Nexus device is about the nicest treat. The devices are usually very well designed and have awesome specs. Not to mention the fact that they are the first in line to get updates.

The Nexus brand hasn’t reached the tablet market until now, though. And Android fans have been praying for such a tablet to be released. If you fall under that category, you will be happy to know that Google has released the Nexus 7.

The Nexus 7 is a 7-inch device with a Tegra 3 processor manufactured by ASUS. Also, this device is said to be a “Kindle Fire Killer” with a $200 price tag.

Considering to the huge market desire and excellent performance, and the success of low-priced Nexus 7, a Nexus 7 refresh is in great need. There’re rumors then new Nexus 7 would be Nexus 7.7.

    Google Nexus 5

    Nexus 5

There’re rumors indicating that we could see a different phone at Google I/O: The Google Nexus 5. The previous incarnation, the Google Nexus 4, has been immensely popular and has been selling out in stores across the U.S. The Nexus 5 is expected boost up some hardware specs, which customers complained were a little less impressive than the competition’s (especially the camera), and have an improved processor. However, sources close to Google have told Heavy that the Nexus 5 will come sometime in the Fall of 2013.

    Another Google Glass Presentation

    Google Glass

Google Glass was introduced at Google I/O 2012 and continues to be a hot topic in the tech world. As wearable technology — including smartwatches — becomes more and more interesting to companies like Amazon, Samsung, Apple and Google, Google’s revolutionary eyeware has a chance to be as equally groundbreaking as the original iPhone was to the smartphone industry. Therefore, it’s unlikely that Google will not take this opportunity to show off some new features for Google Glass, which we’ve heard developers have been working on secretly.

  • Google+ Pages helps you easily connect with everything you care about worldwide

Posted on November 21st, 2011 David Brooks No comments

Google+ PagesSince the street marketing date of Google+, Google has claimed Google+ aims to make sharing on the web more like sharing in real life. Everything on Google+ is designed to make sharing more convenient and easier, which has made Google+ a vital competitor to Facebook. The user-friendly features like Circles, Hangouts, Messengers, etc. attract people around the world. And just a few days ago, a new tool was brought out by Google+, the Google+ Pages. Let’s take a look on what Google+ Pages is and what it could do, from the explanation of Vic Gundotra, Senior Vice President of Engineering. I extracted the post of Vic Gundotra bellow, just to share with you about the new Google+ Pages.

In life we connect with all kinds of people, places and things. There’s friends and family, of course, but there’s also the sports teams we root for, the coffee shops we’re loyal to, and the TV shows we can’t stop watching (to name a few).

So far Google+ has focused on connecting people with other people. But we want to make sure you can build relationships with all the things you care about—from local businesses to global brands—so today we’re rolling out Google+ Pages worldwide.

    People + pages, better together

Google+ has always been a place for real-life sharing, and Google+ Pages is no exception. After all: behind every page (or storefront, or four-door sedan) is a passionate group of individuals, and we think you should able to connect with them too.

For you and me, this means we can now hang out live with the local bike shop, or discuss our wardrobe with a favorite clothing line, or follow a band on tour. Google+ pages give life to everything we find in the real world. And by adding them to circles, we can create lasting bonds with the pages (and people) that matter most.

For businesses and brands, Google+ pages help you connect with the customers and fans who love you. Not only can they recommend you with a +1, or add you to a circle to listen long-term. They can actually spend time with your team, face-to-face-to-face. All you need to do is start sharing, and you’ll soon find the super fans and loyal customers that want to say hello.

A number of pages are already available (see below), but any organization will soon be able to join the community at plus.google.com/pages/create.

    Leawo Software

    Angry Birds

    Barcelona Football Club

    Good Morning America

    H&M

    Pepsi

    * You can join Leawo Software for a live Hangout on the Leawo Software’s Google+ page today!

    Direct Connect from Google search

People search on Google billions of times a day, and very often, they’re looking for businesses and brands. Today’s launch of Google+ Pages can help people transform their queries into meaningful connections, so we’re rolling out two ways to add pages to circles from Google search. The first is by including Google+ pages in search results, and the second is a new feature called Direct Connect.

Maybe you’re watching a movie trailer, or you just heard that your favorite band is coming to town. In both cases you want to connect with them right now, and Direct Connect makes it easy—even automatic. Just go to Google and search for [+], followed by the page you’re interested in (like +Angry Birds). We’ll take you to their Google+ page, and if you want, we’ll add them to your circles.

Direct Connect works for a limited number of pages today (like +Google, +Pepsi, and +Toyota), but many more are coming. In the meantime, organizations can learn more about Direct Connect in our Help Center.

With Google+, we strive to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software. Today’s initial launch of Google+ Pages brings us a little bit closer, but we’ve still got lots of improvements planned, and miles to go before we sleep. So stay tuned.

  • Share YouTube videos on Google+ account freely via AutoShare

Posted on October 18th, 2011 David Brooks No comments

Just several days ago, the YouTube team announced exciting news for all YouTube and Google+ users, the following shows what it is: now you can discover new YouTube videos that your friends are sharing on Google+ on the YouTube homepage. Head over to the YouTube Settings page (http://www.youtube.com/account_sharing ) and “Connect” your YouTube Account with your Google+ account to start seeing videos shared with you in Google+ show up on the YouTube homepage. The news tells us that now the YouTube videos would be shared on Google+ easily, just with the help of some AutoShare settings.

Connect YouTube to Google+YouTube now allows you to connect your YouTube account to your Google+ account, which would result in that the YouTube videos you shared appears in your Google+ stream, via the AutoShare function of YouTube. However, currently, the AutoShare function is still limited in streaming YouTube videos to your Google+, while the comments of YouTube videos you shared and the YouTube you upload could not be automatically streamed to Google+. Another disadvantage of this AutoShare function is that you need to wait for couple of hours for the activation of this function after you set in Settings > Sharing for automatically streaming. What’s worse is that the shared YouTube videos are seriously hysteretic to be streamed to Google+. That means there might still be a long time for us to fully share online videos between Google+ and other online video sharing sites.

  • Google acquired Motorola Mobility Holdings for $12.5 billion to enhance mobile computing competitiveness

Posted on August 16th, 2011 David Brooks No comments

The news of the combination of the two companies – Google and Motorola Mobility Holdings has been confirmed. Google acquired Motorola Mobility Holdings on Monday for a total $12.5 billion, $40.00 per share in cash. Motorola Mobility will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. Google will run Motorola Mobility as a separate business. The transaction was unanimously approved by the boards of directors of both companies. The acquisition of Motorola Mobility would definitely enable Google to supercharge the Android ecosystem and enhance mobile computing competitiveness of Google.

    Google buys Motorola Mobility

Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies. Together, we will create amazing user experiences that supercharge the entire Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers. I look forward to welcoming Motorolans to our family of Googlers,” said Larry Page, CEO of Google.

Sanjay Jha, CEO of Motorola Mobility, said, “This transaction offers significant value for Motorola Mobility’s stockholders and provides compelling new opportunities for our employees, customers, and partners around the world. We have shared a productive partnership with Google to advance the Android platform, and now through this combination we will be able to do even more to innovate and deliver outstanding mobility solutions across our mobile devices and home businesses.

Google’s Android software is widely used by Motorola and several other mobile device-makers like HTC, LG, etc. and there have been quite many popular smartphones and devices based on the Android OS, like Motorola Xoom, Motorola Droid Bionic, Motorola Droid X, etc. Along with the excellent mobile phone and Android OS performance, smart mobile phone users could make full use of these smart phones: freely surf on the internet, record HD videos for sharing, rip DVD to Android OS phones to watch HD DVD movies on Android phones, rip Blu-ray to Motorola Xoom to watch HD Blu-ray on Xoom in HD video playback, etc.

    Motorola Droid Bionic

Along with the acquisition, there are many advantages for both Google and Motorola Mobility: Google itself has not been a device-maker before now, but this deal, the biggest acquisition for Google to date, marks that Google would take its place among a select group of companies that make both hardware and software for hand-held computing gadgets. What’s more, another strategic advantage of this acquisition is the access to more than 17,000 patents held by Motorola for Google, which would help Google stave off a barrage of claims levied by rivals battling the company’s Android mobile operating system. And due to the excellent performance of Motorola Mobility in set-top boxes for cable TV, this acquisition would also boost Google’s faltering efforts in Internet-connected TVs.

    Google’s biggest buys

Motorola Mobility Holdings, $12.5 billion, announced August 2011

DoubleClick, $3.1 billion, Internet display advertising, closed March 2008

YouTube, $1.65 billion, Internet video, closed November 2006

AdMob, $750 million, mobile advertising, closed May 2010

ITA Software, $700 million, travel search software, closed April 2011
