Smartphone of the year Award, best camera – Google Pixel

Technobuffalo just elected the smartphone with best camera for 2016. It’s the Google Pixel.

When the device was announced, it was claimed to be holding the title of the highest-rated camera ever on DxO – an industry standard for camera and lens image quality measurements and ratings. Many people doubted it because Google never really had a good handle on the camera considering that the previous Nexus phones aren’t that good. And DxO ratings don’t necessarily translate into high quality camera performance at every shot you take.

But when it comes to the Pixel in 2016, it seems things have changed. There have been a lot of devices capable of taking awesome photos but the Pixel’s camera had been proven to be able to take pictures with the best exposure, focusing and image quality. Google really did a great job on tuning the camera on Pixel.

Google Pixel uses the same sensor that can be found in the Nexus 5X and 6P, which is a 1/2.3” Sony IMX 377 12.3MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.0. Also the camera features phase detection, laser auto focus, a revamped HDR+ mode and the new video stabilization. But optical image stabilization is missing from the Pixel.

First thing first, the interface of the camera is straightforward and easy to use. Taking a quick picture is easy with the Pixel. Shutter speeds are good in good lighting condition, and the autofocus works fine most of the time.

The Google Pixel is capable of taking really excellent photos almost every single time. And the HDR+ should take credit for the great performance. The Audo HDR+ mode helps get rid of a lot of noise in low-light condition and some darker areas of the scene and at the same time still keeps the colors on the warmer side of things.

And the Google Pixel is not just about snapping great pictures, Google made things better by allowing users to upload unlimited full-sized pictures and videos from the Google Pixel to Google Photos and it’s exclusive to the Pixel and not available to other devices. Other users are going to have to pay for extra space.
