Mac OS X Lion vs. Windows 8 Developer Preview speed comparison

Due to the different structures of Mac OS X Lion and Windows 8, there is no comparability on techniques on these two popular operation systems. However, as consumer-oriented operation systems, we could make a comparison between these two operation systems on the experience speed, including Startup, Shutdown, CD Ripping in iTunes, Geekbench 2.2 64-bit score, etc. The PCMag has made a speed testing for Mac OS X Lion and Windows 8 Developer Preview (for the official Windows 8 is far finished, the Windows 8 Developer Preview version is adopted here.) The content and result of the speed comparison between Mac OS X Lion and Windows 8 Developer Preview is showed in the picture bellow:

Quite obviously, the Windows 8 Developer Preview advanced in the Startup, Greekbench, Mozilla Kraken and Psychedelic Browsing, but loses in the Shutdown, CD Ripping and SunSpider parts. But in the CD Ripping in iTunes test, we could see the difference is quite little. As a universal popular app, the iTunes in Mac OS X Lion spent 3:44 minutes to rip CD to video while that in Windows 8 Developer Preview costs 3:52 minutes.

From this speed testing, Windows 8 bested Lion slightly. Since the benchmark is mostly designed to rate the hardware, any slight improvement is a feather in the OS software’s cap. Windows 8 showed a nearly 17 percent edge over Lion. Of course, this test only relies on the partial speed performance, thus couldn’t stand the final result for which is better. Let’s just wait for the official release of the Windows 8 OS and then we could make a more detailed comparison.

CES 2012 – Several big themes to focus on in the following days in Las Vegas

The International Consumer Electronics Show (short as CES) is a major technology-related trade show held each January in the Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. Not open to the public, the Consumer Electronics Association-sponsored show typically hosts previews of products and new product announcements. The CES 2012 exhibition, started today, will last from Tuesday, January 10 to Friday, January 13. Microsoft released an official statement saying that CES 2012 will be Microsoft’s last appearance at the event.

Summary: CES 2012 is upon us, and it’s time to get ready for a whole new year in gadgetry and other tech goodness.

The world’s largest tech trade show is just about to get underway, and even though there will be thousands upon thousands of products on display, many of them can be narrowed down and traced by a few major themes.

Yes, I’m talking about the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The scale of the show gets bigger each year, and there is just so much going on that it can becoming daunting (if not impossible) to stay focused and sift through everything.

Last year, many of the world’s biggest companies tended to focus on trends such as the Internet-connected living room (meaning, an ecosystem of home entertainment within a single brand), the dawn of 4G-enabled smartphones, and just about anything to do with 3D.

ZDNet Special Report: What CES means for business

We’ll likely see continuations of these themes next week, but here are some of the bigger themes to watch out more for this year:

TABLETS: We saw a bunch of these last year, but really none of the tablets that debuted at CES last year really made a dent in the market. The iPad 2 and the Kindle Fire, neither of which had even been announced prior or around CES 2011, were the real money-makers last year.

So why should we even care about tablets at CES 2012? Well, the technology for tablets (and smartphones, for that matter) has improved significantly, and one can only hope that manufacturers have learned a few lessons in the last year. Furthermore, with the debut of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) later in 2011, there’s definitely room for more potential.

ULTRABOOKS: Poised to replace netbooks and compete heavily with tablets and other laptops in the same size range, 2012 could be the year of the Ultrabook. Intel has already boasted a bunch that there are 60 Ultrabook designs with OEM partners set to roll out this year. Thus, you can expect everyone at CES to be promoting their own Ultrabook. It remains to be seen which ones will come out ahead — if any at all if these new laptops can overcome some hurdles.

WINDOWS 8: Supposedly, some Ultrabooks are supposed to be running on this operating system, so we should see more about its launch soon. That could be as soon as next week as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer is lined up (once again) to give the main keynote address. Besides Windows Phone 8, Windows 8 itself is one of the only other big-ticket items that most consumers will likely be concerned with in 2012.  If not, expect him to talk about Kinect for another hour.

GREEN: Even though it seems like old news at this point, the eco-friendly trend is never going to go away and will likely always have a growing presence at CES and similar trade shows. In a way, that’s a good thing. While the upfront costs are still rather expensive for most products that tout this facet, green technology has the potential to save a lot of money in the long run, and the more that developers keep this in mind, those upfront costs will eventually drop.

What not to look for? Apple or Google. These two prefer to host their own events — Apple doesn’t even exhibit at Macworld anymore, and there is Google I/O later in springtime.

And if you’re a Microsoft fan, enjoy them at the show while you can as they’ll be gone by 2013.

Apple iPad 3

If the gossip is true, the next-generation iPad will be a sight to behold. Apple iPhone 5

Apple just released iPhone 4S last October as the successor of iPhone 4 with quite wonderful voice-recognizing personal assistant Siri and an excellent 8-megapixel camera. With the edge-to-edge design, the iPhone 4S provides even better video enjoyment for users to watch watch HD Blu-ray/DVD on iPhone 4S. The next generation of iPhone is firmly believed to be more suitable for HD video enjoyment. The rumored curved glass screen and daring teardrop shape are apparently still on the drawing board over in Cupertino. Assuming that the iPhone 5 arrives in 2012, it just might pack the visual wallop that Apple watchers have been waiting for.

Quad-core Mobile device

Speedy dual-core processors, such as Apple’s A5 in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, will soon be old news as even faster quad-core chips migrate to the mobile market. Chip maker Nvidia says that smartphones featuring its quad-core Tegra 3 processors may arrive in the first half of 2012. And quad-core tablets, such as the Tegra 3-powered Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime, are already here. Qualcomm, meanwhile, says that its quad-core Snapdragon chips will appear in Windows 8 tablets in the second half of 2012.

Xbox 360 update

Will the next-generation Xbox arrive in 2012? The latest rumors from reliable sources, including Supersite for Windows editor Paul Thurrott, say the next Xbox is slated for a 2013 debut. Until then, Xbox fans will have to be content with software upgrades, including an Xbox 360 dashboard update sporting a Windows 8, Metro-style interface.

Android 4.0 phones

The latest version of Google’s mobile operating system is already generating buzz in the mobile world. Android 4.0 offers a lot to love: a polished interface, improved multitasking, better search tools, and the intriguing-yet-gimmicky Face Unlock and Android Beam.

Plus, a fresh batch of Android smartphones (led by the Samsung Galaxy Nexus) and a new generation of tablets (including the Asus Eee Pad Transformer 2) are designed specifically for Android 4.0, also known as Ice Cream Sandwich.

Windows Phone 7 Platform

The Microsoft platform is very strong in the enterprise space because of the management and security features released in 6.x. Windows Phone 7, released in 2010, will be a leap forward for Microsoft, with strong hardware and UI standardization better integration with social networks. Nokia’s adoption of WP7 should also help spur sales, and WP7 handsets such as the Samsung Focus S are getting good reviews. The next 12 months may decide whether Windows Phone 7 handsets succeed or go the way of the Zune.

Sony Playstation Vita

Sony’s Vita, announced last year, includes a five-inch display, dual analog sticks for game controls and a quad-core processor. The Vita will come in two models, one version with Wi-Fi only while the other version with Wi-Fi and 3G cellular connectivity. The detailed price levels of both two versions have been confirmed online: the version that includes both Wi-Fi and 3G offers two AT&T data plans: $15 for 250 megabytes a month or $25 for 2 gigabytes a month, while the Wi-Fi-only device will cost $250, and the 3G-plus-Wi-Fi one will cost $300.

Microsoft plans to unveil Windows 8 on the Microsoft Build Conference

The 2011 Microsoft Build Conference is being held in Anaheim of California during September 13 and September 16. BUILD is a new event that shows modern hardware and software developers how to take advantage of the future of Windows. The latest news showed that Microsoft would be going to unveil the new Windows 8 details on the beginning day of the conference.

The biggest appeal of Windows 8 is that it will offer the Windows platform on tablets for the first time in addition to personal computers. The biggest question is whether Microsoft is too late to make a stand in the tablet war raging between Apple’s iPad and various Google slates.
This is a very important moment for Microsoft. Since the popularity of tablets smartphones, especially Apple iPad and other tablet devices, owns the functions to replace PC, the sales volume growth rate of PC has been slowed down. And by far, Microsoft has output no competitive solutions to the sharp competition from tablets. Microsoft needs to innovate now to keep a hold on its market share. If the company can really find a way to bridge the gap between mobile computing and desktop computing, then it could have a winner on its hands.

Here are the highlights of what we know about Windows 8:
1. It supports ARM architecture, creating a threat to the “Wintel” partnership Intel and Microsoft has shared for years.
2. The interface is similar to the “live tiles” in the Windows Phone 7 system — and phones are supposed to get a flavor of Windows 8 at some point.
3. It’s supposed to have faster boot times, USB 3.0 support and Hyper-V integration.
4. The interface was designed as a touch-first interface, though it will work “equally well” with a mouse and keyboard.
