What is a meteor?
A meteor shower, also known as “meteor storms” or “meteor outbursts“, is a celestial event in which a number of meteors are observed to radiate from one point in the night sky. These meteors are caused by streams of cosmic debris called meteoroids entering Earth’s atmosphere at extremely high speed on parallel trajectories. As most Meteors are smaller than a grain of sand, so almost all meteoroids disintegrate and never hit the Earth’s surface. Fragments which do contact Earth’s surface are called meteorites.

The most visible meteor shower in most years are the Perseids, which peak on August 12 of each year at over 1 meteor a minute.

What causes a meteor shower?
There are tiny dust-sized particles in Earth’s path around the Sun. These particles are usually leftovers from asteroids or comets. When Earth passes through these particles during its orbit, they burn up in our atmosphere producing bright lines. This is called Meteor shower.

It depends on the type of meteors. Crrently, there are three types of meteors. Stony, Iron, and Stony-Iron. Stony are made of rocks and dust. This is the most common type of meteor. Iron meteors are made of iron. Stony-Iron are made of rocks and metals, and this is the least common type of meteor.

Where do meteors come from? How are meteorites created?
Meteorites come from comet trails. When a comet soars across the galaxy and comes through earth’s atmosphere, molecules fall off of the trail. When they clump together, they form meteorites.

When is the meteor going to hit earth?
When the speed of meteor is enough and the meteors who are able to drill through the aerosphere, then it will land on the earth and be called meteorite.

why is it difficult for many people to see a meteor shower?
There are several reasons for us to have a difficulty to see them.
First is location. These are bright objects and will stand out against a dark background. If you are looking at a clear night sky, you’ll see them. However, if there are city lights around, it’ll be almost impossible. The bright lights will almost certainly drown them out.
Second is the Moon. If the light from the Moon is very bright. This would also cause us hard to enjoy the meteor shower.
Besides, the biggest factor is the weather of course. Cloudy skies and thunderstorms can make it almost impossible to see them.

In fact, a meteor showers occurs frequently instead of only taking place on one evening. They usually happen over several days. Some days they will be more conspicuous. So we needn’t feel regret for one time miss.
