Windows Media Player is a basic component of any edition of Windows Operation System to play videos and audios as well as to copy music and burn CDs. It is also an essential unit for programs that embed it as a preview player such as Windows Movie Maker. But Microsoft doesn’t frequently update Windows Media Player’s codec library, or it does rarely, so it is weaker in compatibility among media types compared to open source media players, such as MPlayer and KMPlayer. Why don’t we just update it all by ourselves to make it a universal player? It is absolutely possible and extremely easy to do so. Just follow me through this guide and you will make it happen in 2 minutes.

Download K-lite Codec Pack Standard Edition and install.
K-lite Codec Pack is a free aggregate of video and audio codec to supply Windows systems for extensive media playback ability. It is distributed in six editions started from Basic to Mega plus an extra 64-bit. I recommend the Standard edition in this case. You can check the other editions when surfing on K-lite author’s site or simply see the reference below.

Basic: The Basic edition is the smallest edition and enables a Microsoft Windows computer to play Matroska(MKV), MP4, Ogg and Adobe Flash video (FLV) files in addition to various types of AVI files. It only consists of ffdshow (for audio and video decoding), DirectVobSub (for subtitle decoding), Codec Tweak Tool and four other minor components. This edition does not come with Media Player Classic.
Standard: The Standard edition includes all features of the Basic edition plus a DVD Video decoder, Media Info Lite and Media Player Classic Homecinema. This edition enables DVD playback in Microsoft Windows. The author recommends this package for normal users.
Full: The Full edition includes 31 additional components and four additional tools in addition to those included in Standard edition and adds video encoding capabilities to Microsoft Windows PCs. However, no encoding or conversion tool is included in the package.
Corporate: The Corporate edition does not include 5 of the components included in Full edition and has a different DVD Video decoder component than the one that is present in Full edition. The author recommends this package for corporate environments.
Mega: The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack is a combination of K-Lite Codec Pack Full, Real Alternative and 14 other additional components not present in any other edition. Amongst these components, there is the original Media Player Classic (along with Media Player Classic Homecinema), GSpot Codec Information Appliance and FourCC Changer.
64-bit: The 64-bit K-Lite Codec Pack is an independent package of 64-bit codecs that can be used with 64-bit players on a 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows and can co-exist side by side with one of the other editions.

After install the codec pack, don’t first do anything else. Just open Windows Media Player, flick some videos in MKV, FLV, DVD video formats and see if the pictures appear appropriately on screen. I would bet on a success rate which is one thousand against one. BTW, this magnificent codec pack can also enhance the playability of MPlayer and KMPlayer which you have previously installed. Do it yourself, make your Windows Media Player a universal player without any technical knowledge needed.

Tips: Leawo Video Converter incorporates K-lite Codec Pack Standard Edition. This installation option is recommended to secure media type support during video conversion and in addition, enhance compatibility and performance of all installed media players.
